Fifteen years later WHO finally gave it a code in neurology - and for all those 15 years NO ONE used "benign" - the name was ME. So why WHO keeps it is beyond me. In the winter of 1984-85 Straus proclaimed publicly that the outbreaks were chronic EBV. By 1986 he was using "the chronic fatigue syndrome" in internal memos because, as he stated in a funding memo, the outbreaks had turned out not to be CEBV.

If he publicly stated otherwise, that would be par for the course for him. But in 1988 Straus, along with Holmes, pushed the committee to chose CFS. And in 1988 Straus published an article that concluded it was well known the patients had mental issues - citing the McAvedy and Beard articles from 1970-71 that labeled the Royal Free Outbreak and others "hysterical paralysis."

If he continued to fight for EBV, then, it could not have been for "long." It's only two years between 1984 and 1986.

Even after the CEBV theory was discarded, Straus continued to be the gatekeeper for all NIH research funding into the disease. Hardly an impartial way for research funding to be decided. Yes, one suspects many went along with his pet name for the disease in fear of being frozen out of NIH funding. There are still some playing the same games with CDC.

I think we both agree that this unholy bargain has been, and remains, a bad trade-off for science and patients alike.Mary Schweitzerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11583106682242141031noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1345573145957924958.post-44670736282579047782015-10-05T08:42:25.989-07:002015-10-05T08:42:25.989-07:00Your history is not accurate.
Straus continued ...Your history is not accurate.
Straus continued to fight for EBV long after Cheney and Peterson had disproven it. To keep this possibility open, Straus directed Holmes to remove citations that linked "Tahoe evidence" from his new syndrome definition.
As a junior epidemiologist, Holmes had little choice but to accede to Straus's authority. But Holmes left one window of opportunity open, by handing out "The Tahoe Study" during the Holmes committee's deliberations.
This pointed the new syndrome directly back at the Tahoe evidence.

Straus placed the CFS community in a predicament.
To either stand by Dr Cheney and Peterson, insisting "CFS is the outbreak and evidence the syndrome was based on; a typical outbreak of ME"
Or to, in effect, become an adherent of Straus by saying "The syndrome is whatever Straus/CDC says it is"

Some chose the former.
Too many chose the latter, and the will of Straus prevailed.

ErikMoldWarriorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09322977790589236453noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1345573145957924958.post-40781013776403703302015-10-03T20:27:59.959-07:002015-10-03T20:27:59.959-07:00Thanks to Jean Harrison for helping me with some s...Thanks to Jean Harrison for helping me with some specific details.Mary Schweitzerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11583106682242141031noreply@blogger.com
